The Postcard Tour continues... "As time goes by" might be the best way to describe these postcards. I was looking through some old advertising cards from the early 1950s and couldn't help wondering whatever happened to these old motels and inns. |
![]() This '50s era postcard is for the Kona Inn on the Big Island. Notice the surf board shaped tilted lounges, the thatched roofs, the angry sky and of course the pool. Swimming pools have always been important when choosing a place to spend the night. |
![]() This card is postmarked 1973. It's for the Happy Traveler Recreational Park in the heart of Palm Springs, California. No motel, just a place to park your trailer or RV for the night while you enjoy the pool, of course. It was located 100 feet off of Palm Canyon Drive, 5 blocks south of town. Wonder if it's still there? Probably not. The folks who sent this card were campers and mentioned that "this afternoon we're off to Indio to watch the camel races." (Camel Races in Indio. I'll have to check that out! Stay tuned.) |
![]() This is high above Tucson, Arizona, looking down on the El Rancho Motor Hotel. AAA rated, featuring luxurious bedrooms, kitchenettes, TVs, and heated pool. It's always about the pool. You could settle in and stay awhile. But the people who sent the card said that "it sure is hot. I feel like coming back home already. Guess we'll keep the air cooler (?) on all night." Oh-oh. |
![]() This is my favorite. It's called the Sunset Traitel Trailer Park, located on Fremont Street in Las Vegas. I'm amazed at the beautiful trees in the background. On Fremont Street! I'll bet they're all gone now. Wonder if this has become an RV park? It advertises that it's conveniently located near the Showboat Hotel, which features a restaurant, casino, bowling and bingo. Something for everybody. Notice the pool in the foreground. |
