Here's a photo of a lion statue found in St. Peter's square, Roma, according to one of our readers


Update 2006:
In the late 1990s we posted a couple of photos of some Italian lion statues. The poor quality photo below was one of them. There was an inscription on the book under the lion's paw, which read: "
PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS", which we eventually decoded to mean "Peace to you Mark my evangelist".

This photo was sent to us in 2006. It bears a certain similarity to the Venice statue.
Now we know what the inscription means!
