A Nearly Perfect Novel Query Letter

by Pete Geary

I'm a Wapiti
A Wapiti' Tale

Dear Editor,

In accordance with your guidelines, I am submitting the first three chapters of CLINT – A WAPITI'S TALE. Upon your reading, I feel certain that you will demand to see the rest of the work.

This novel draws heavily on the Faulkner style, in that each sentence, through an imaginative use of commas and semi-colons, is 3,000 words long.

The first three chapters deal with Clint’s early years as a carefree young buck. He spends his days gamboling about the forest until the sad day when his parents are blown away when they carelessly wander onto a skeet shooting range. Clint learns a valuable lesson about avoiding both humans and clay pigeons.

The next six chapters are concerned with Clint’s voyage of self-discovery, as he migrates across the country in search of the elk equivalent of happiness. During his journeys, he befriends many small woodland animals who relate tiny nuggets of wisdom to Clint before demonstrating the inevitability of the food chain by being eaten by predators.

The remaining twenty seven or so chapters relate Clint’s eventual fall into self pity and cynicism. They describe Clint's decision to relocate to the Arctic Circle to avoid contact with other wapiti, as well as the large number of wise, but easily digested creatures.

Finally in the Arctic , Clint meets Nero, a wolf who teaches him about the many joys that life holds in store, and how to hunt down baby seals for dinner.

So Clint comes full circle - from a happy carefree herbivore to a snarling carnivore who finds total fulfillment by chasing down creatures smaller and slower than himself.

This is truly a story that even feebleminded readers will enjoy. I feel certain that this novel will quickly be optioned for a screen play, no doubt directed by Ingmar Bergman, or if he's dead, some other brooding Swedish director.

To date my short fiction pieces have been accepted by the Elk’s Club Monthly Journal, and the Santa Ana Junior High School newspaper, the Hot Air Gazette.

Thank you for your personal attention to my submission. I look forward to your reply in the enclosed SASE.

Sincerely,

The author
