Marcy's Special Summer

by Jenny Kemp

a real elephant

I'm called Jenny (although I also go by the name Midnight Black) which is the name of my band. I'm an ex-Art and Design student from Kent, England. I worked for 3 years as a pixel artist, but am currently taking time out to write and illustrate. I also have written a few articles on various issues that affect teenagers and parents today.

It was the summer holidays yet again, and Marcy couldn’t help but feel bored. Her parents always dragged her to a caravan park in the middle of the countryside for the entire summer. She wouldn’t have really minded if it was just for a week, but the entire summer! She would miss everybody’s birthday parties and Amy would get to go to Disney World with Becca instead of her.

It was a nice sunny day in Bocastle Camping Ground, but that didn’t increase Marcy’s mood very much. She even refused to go with her brother Adam to the local fairground, choosing instead to sit around sulking with her favourite book.

She didn’t even look up when there was a loud sound outside her caravan. It was only when she felt her book being dragged out of the open window, that she looked up. Imagine her surprise when she saw an Elephant trying to suck her book into its mouth.

She was going to scream and shout when suddenly she realised how exciting all this really was. Becca and Amy may be at Disney world with Mickey mouse, but she was here with a real live elephant! How often did that happen.

She ran out the caravan, giving up wrestling with the Elephant for her book, and went to have a closer look at the elephant, which seemed gigantic to her.

It was then, that a flustered woman in a black velvet suit came running up to her. “Oh thank you!” She shouted to Marcy. “This elephant ran off from the fair while I was on my lunch break.” She said as she got closer to Marcy and the Elephant. “It’s name is Rolo, would you like to ride him as a reward for finding him?” she said smiling at Marcy.

Marcy nodded as she had lost all ability to speak. The lady lifted Marcy up onto Rolo’s back.

Rolo was very comfortable, Marcy thought as she held on to Rolo.

Unknown to Marcy, her mother was watching and she took some pictures on her camera, as she thought Marcy would want to remember this moment forever.

When they got to the end of the field, Rolo picked Marcy up with his trunk and placed her down onto the grass. “That was amazing!” Marcy said to the Lady. “Thank you.” She added politely. Then seeing her mother in the crowd of onlookers she ran up to her and hugged her.

Later that week she phoned up Becca, only to find that she hadn’t gone to Disney world after all, because she had got chicken pox the week before.

It was the best summer she had ever had.
