My wish for the Earth by Terri Coffman |

I love the Native American’s philosophy about Mother Earth: She is here to provide, so take only what you need for survival; respect the land; and give back when you can, and always give thanks for all Life. How wonderful she is, our Mother Earth! She provides us with everything we need to survive. But we have not been as good to her. Listen! Can you hear her quiet whispers in the wind? “You are destroying Me! My streams are evaporating beneath human garbage, and my trash-strewn oceans are being ignored. My forests are being demolished and I cannot grow trees fast enough to replace the oxygen. You are destroying my ozone layer, and my mighty glaciers are melting at a dangerous rate.” I love Mother Earth. Her beauty abounds everywhere. I give thanks for wildlife sanctuaries, aviaries, open ranges, flat prairies, tall mountains; and for small for backyard gardens that grow with blossoms and fruit, horse farms and cow pastures, birds‘ nests and bee hives. I love the rolling countryside, stark canyons, majestic mountains, cool rivers, high waterfalls, delicate wildflowers and sturdy roadside blooms. I marvel at rainbows, the fragile wings of the migrating butterfly, and the impressive wingspan of the eagle soaring effortlessly toward the heavens. I behold the wonder of the glorious colors in the sky at dawn and dusk, and am amazed at the crystal twinkling stars on a clear dark night, looking so close you can reach out and touch them. At times like this all seems perfect with the world. Look at the world around us; there is beauty everywhere. Whether we live amidst the snow and ice of Alaska, the sand and cactus of Arizona, under the swaying palm trees of Florida, or within the foothills of the splendid, Rocky Mountains, there is beauty. Like all good mothers, Mother Earth is trying her best to keep herself going for all her wards: the people and animals of the land, the fish in the oceans, and the birds in the sky, and plants and trees upon the land. But unfortunately, we, Her Children, are destroying her faster than she can rebuild. We keep taking without giving back. It is my wish for the earth is that we all show gratitude and give thanks for the soil beneath our feet and the air that we breathe. Let us all take a stand for reclamation efforts of every kind. Let us work together to help save our endangered wildlife, those that walk, crawl, climb, and swim; help save our trees; help save our water resources; and clean up our air. Let us help save ourselves! My wish for the earth is that we all band together to help save our precious Mother Earth. She has given us so much! Isn’t it time we start showing her our love and appreciation for her gallant efforts to keep us alive and provided for? Isn’t it time that we start giving back now, before we ourselves become an endangered species? |
